Ekadashi that occurs during the Bhadrapad Krishna paksha is known as Aja ekadashi. People offer their prayers to Lord Vishnu on this ekadhashi and perform jagran. It is common for them to observe fast on this day and it is thought that a person gets rid of all his sinful activities by praying to Lord Vishnu on this day. You can observe the importance of this ekadashi explained by Lord Krishna in Brahmavaivarta purana. Those who observe the fast on this day gets fame and happiness in life.

According to mythological inscriptions, the legend of great king Harishchandra is believed to be behind this ekadashi. It is also mentioned that the king got back all his property, wife and dead son by sacrificing food and worshiping Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi. Gautama Rishi suggested the king Harishchandra to observe this ekadashi.

Given below are some rules to perform fast on this ekadashi:

One should never eat meat on Dashmi tihti, the day before ekadashi.
On the night of Dashmi tihti, he should not consume masoor daal.
Grams and Karonda should not be taken on this day.
People must refrain from eating leafy vegetables and honey.
Person must not eat food by borrowing from others on this day.
Person should observe Brahmacharya and never gamble on this day.
Person should also not have to speak lie on this auspicious day.
People should get up early in the morning and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu after cleaning the house and taking bath. One should perform the puja according to the traditions and finally one has to read the story describing Aja Ekadashi.
