Buddha Purnima

This is the festival associated with Buddhists. Gautam Buddha, who was considered to be the creator of Buddhism, took birth on this day. It falls on purnima on full moon day. The birth, enlightenment and passing away of Buddha is ought to be remembered on this day. He is considered to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He performs three tasks as if creator-preserver-destroyer. He is the eminent teacher the world has ever found. Even after so many years of his demise his teachings are still followed by the people. It is the biggest achievement of his working. No doubt there is some truth in his disciplines that is the main reason why people are still following him till today and even want to pass the legacy to their young generation.   


Significance: This day is mainly celebrated to bring happiness to poor, aged, ill or any other person who has lost hope from the life. It brings joy and happiness to each and everyone associated with it. Temples are well decorated and adored with beautiful colours. It teaches us the lesson of non violence through which we can purify our mind and body. 


Principles that he set: Five principles called Panchsheel are as follows:
1. Not to take life
2. Not to steal
3. Not to lie
4. Not to consume liquor or other intoxicants
5. Not to commit adultery

3. Law of Cause and Effect 
Than there were the four noble truths of life. They are as follows:

The Four Noble Truths
1. There is Suffering Suffering is common to all. 
2. Cause of Suffering We are the cause of our suffering. 
3. End of Suffering Stop doing what causes suffering. 
4. Path to end Suffering Everyone can be enlightened.

The Noble Eightfold Path:

1. Right View.
2. Right Thought.
3. Right Speech.
4. Right Conduct.
5. Right Livelihood.
6. Right Effort.
7. Right Mindfulness.
8. Right Concentration.

 

Celebrated in: It is revered across the country at different dates. Countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other sees this festival with full devotion. People from all round the world at their respective places find Buddha temple and pay their homage to the deity in their own unique way.

 

Pooja Vidhi: Buddhist flag unfurl on this day almost at all the Buddha temple where people gather to witness the festivity. Songs and hymns which are related to the deity are sung by the people as a token of respect to him. People used to remember his disciplines and rules which he followed throughout his life and always teach other to follow them for the betterment of the society. The attire for the day is of white colour. Lightening of candles, offering of flowers, joss sticks and Prasad as mishri and elachi are the other activities used to conduct on this day. The continuous bathing of Buddha scriptures are conducted. Charity to poor and destitute, giving money for the welfare of the society, working for the upliftment of the lower section of society, save the environment are some other activities which some people follow on this day.

 

Brief description about his life: Gautam Buddha or Siddhartha was born in 563 BC to King Suddhodhana, the king of Lumbini in Nepal and his wife Mayadevi. At the age of 16, he married a girl named Yashodhara and after a few years they had a son who was named Rahul. One night he renounced his wife, family and kingdom and went in search of ‘Bodhi’, the celestial knowledge. He wanted to end the human sufferings of old age, sickness and death. One day he sat for meditation under a sacred treed called ‘Bodhi Briksha’ and gained enlightenment at the age of 36. Thereafter he preached extreme penance and austerity to attain Nirvana which became known as Buddhism. Kings like Ashoka became his devotee and preached Buddhism across the world.
