!! Janaki Jayanti !!

Aum Janaknandiniye Vidmahe
Bhumijayai Dheemahi
Tanno Sita Prachodayat !!

Janaki Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birthday Mother Janaki/ Sita. She is said to be the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. Her life was a burning example of chastity, self-control, faithfulness, suffering, and sacrifice of a woman. She was married to Lord Rama and considered to be the most pure lady of all time.

So powerful was her chastity, that even when she was abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka, and kept in captivity, he could never reach near her because the energy she was radiating as a result of the meditation of Lord Rama which she was doing continuously, was powerful enough to burn anybody who would try to come near her without her permission.

When Rama rescued her from the captivity of Ravana, she was asked to take fire-ordeal (Aganipariksha) to prove her purity; she readily agreed and surrendered to her master’s will. But, even after successfully passing through the fire, the subjects of the Ayodhya questioned her purity. Finally, Lord Rama had to abandon her to respect the will of his subjects which he considered his first duty.

Sita spent rest of her life in the Ashram of Maharsi Valmiki in the forest where she gave birth to her two sons, Luv and Kush. When she found life unbearable, she called upon her Mother Earth and requested to swallow her up. Finally, she disappeared the same way, as she appeared.

In some regions of India, particularly western and eastern regions, the appearance/ birthday of Maa Janaki is celebrated as Janki Navami or Sita Navami on the ninth day in the bright half of Vaishakh month (Vaishakh Shukla Navami) whereas, some communities of southern India celebrate it on eighth day of dark half of Magh month (Magh Krishna Paksha Ashtami Day). Since she was totally devoted to his husband all her life, she is worshipped along with Lord Rama always. She is believed as one of the most worshipped Pativratas in Hinduism.

Janaki Jayanti is celebrated to remember her and to hold her as an inspiration to be pure, faithful, self-controlled, able to be strong enough to face sufferings, and able to sacrifice everything for the sake of husband’s well-being, like her.  It is considered that all her sufferings were her actual progress in the path of life. Rightly said, Mahatma Gandhi; "Progress is to be measured in terms of the suffering undergone by the sufferer.” The purer the suffering, the greater is the progress." – Say! Jai Siya Ram!
