तुलसीदास जयंती |Tulsidas Jayanti on 31 Jul 2025 (Thursday)

Tulsidas Jayanti or Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti is the birthday of this great saint and poet Tulsidas. It is held on the seventh day after ‘amavasi’ (waxing moon or Shukl Paksh) in the Shravan month (August). He insisted people on reading the bhakti in his version of Ramayana which is entirely composed by him.

It is said that Tulsidas wrote twelve books and the most famous is the Ramcharitmanas which is referred to as the Bible of North India. It expresses the religious sentiments of Bhakti to Lord Rama. His writing will help in the development of the language.

Significance and a brief insight about his life: Tulsidas wrote that he was the son of a brahman, a member of the highest Hindu caste, but his parents didn't want to keep him because of the astrological interpretation of the planets and stars. Therefore they turned Tulsidas over to a Hindu holy man who raised him. Tulsidas went on to marry a woman with whom he was very much in love. Apparently, at some point, she told him, "If you loved Rama half as much as you love this perishable body, your sorrows would be over," which is credited with awakening his devotion to Rama and changing the course of his life.

Tulsidas Jayanti is a popular festival held all over India.

Sage Valmiki narrated the story of Lord Rama in the Ramayana and after him many poets have retold it. However, Tulsi Ramayana is one of the most venerated Ramayanas. He is regarded as an incarnation of Sage Valmiki. In Bhavishyottar Purana, Lord Shiva tells Parvati how Valmiki got a boon from Hanuman to sing the glories of Lord Rama in the vernacular language in Kali Yuga.

Tulsidas wrote overall 22 different works out of which five are longer and six works shorter including Dohavali, Kavitavali, Gitavali, Krishnavali, and Vinaya Patrika.

Tulsidas was well-versed in Vedic lore, philosophy, and mythology. There is a belief that by virtue of his devotion, Tulsidas could meet Anjaneya, the renowned devotee of Lord Rama during a recitation of the Ramayana. It is believed that Anjaneya helped Tulsidas to see with his own eyes Lord Rama and Lakshman. According to another legend, Tulsidas was thrown into jail as he refused to perform a miracle for Emperor Akhbar but an army of monkeys attacked the jail and set him free!

Tulsidas was a personification of humility and he professed himself the humble follower of his teacher. According to Tulsidas, the name Rama is bigger than Lord Rama himself because ‘Rama’ is a mantra, a sound, the repetition of which can lead one to a higher state of consciousness.

Tulsidas was born in 1532 in Rajpur in Uttar Pradesh to Hulsi Devi and Atmaram Shukla Dubey and the child was named Rama Bhola.

Pooja Vidhi: The devotees visit temples of Lord Ram and Hanuman on Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti. The Ramcharit Manas is read with pious feeling on the day majorly in North India on this auspicious day. Apart from this, Brahmins are fed.

FAQ: Many Hindus believe that Tulsidas died on the same day that he was born. They spend this day fasting and performing works of charity. Reading and reciting the Ramayana is another popular activity, as are discussions, lectures, seminars, and symposia on his life and works.
