Navratri is celebrated to worship nine different forms of Maa Durga (mother goddess) who is considered to be source of ever-flowing energy. The God is by nature motionless, absolutely changeless and Maa Durga is, actually, responsible for all the actions and reactions of the universe. It wouldn’t be exaggerated, if we say that the worshipping of Maa Durga only re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable; it cannot be created or destroyed; it is always there.
The second day of Navratri is dedicated to Brahmacharini Mata who personifies love and loyalty. In this form, she looks highly pious and peaceful, and appears with kamadal (sacred water pot) in the left hand and rudraksh (rosary) in the right hand. This form of Durga is related to severe penance undertaken by Parvati and Sati in their respective births to attain Lord Shiva as their husbands.
The third day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta who is the embodiment of beauty and bravery. She appears with ten hands and three eyes. In her five hands, she holds weapons, like bow, arrow, trishul (lance), sword, and mace. Another three hands carry rosary, lotus, and kamandal (pitcher), and the remaining two hands shows Varada and Abhaya mudras (gesture) blessing her devotees. Half moon (chandra) adores her on her forehead in the shape of a bell (ghanta). Riding on a lion and radiating golden hue, she gives a gorgeous looks.
The sixth Shakti is Mata Kaatyayani who is considered to be the daughter form of Durga. She is the epitome of love, but she can still get angry. She appears with four arms and three eyes sitting on a lion. Her left upper arm holds a sword and the lower left arm holds a lotus; right upper arm is in mudra (gesture) of allaying fears and the right lower in the mudra of granting boon. Her complexion is golden bright and radiant.
Mahagauri form of goddess durga appears with four arms and three eyes. Her upper left arm is in the protecting posture and the lower one holds a trident. The upper right arm holds a tambourine while the lower one is in blessing posture. She is as white as jasmine and adorns white ornaments. Generally, she sits on a bull, but sometimes, she is seen sitting on a white elephant too. Purity compassion and wisdom are depicted in this form of Navdurga. She is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri.
